Who We Are

The McKee story began during the height of the Great Depression when young entrepreneur O.D. McKee began selling 5¢ snack cakes from the back of his 1928 Whippet. In 1934, he and his wife, Ruth, bought a small, failing bakery, using the family car as collateral. Money was so tight they had to put up a sheet near the back of the bakery for the family's living quarters.

Despite years of great adversity, O.D. and Ruth's rare determination finally began to pay off in 1960 when they began selling the first family pack of baked goods, naming them after their granddaughter, Debbie. Around this time, the company finally began making a steady profit.

A Family Bakery

The bakery continued to grow but remained a family bakery. O.D. and Ruth’s sons, Ellsworth and Jack, eventually took leadership positions, and today Ellsworth and Jack's children hold leadership roles. They are beginning to introduce the 4th generation of the McKee family to the business.

McKee Foods stands as a living legacy of a young couple with a big dream. O.D. and Ruth shared a strong commitment to family values that remains our company's foundation today.

BRAND HISTORY

In 1960, McKee Foods founder O.D. McKee was trying to come up with a catchy name for their new family-pack cartons of snack cakes. Thinking of what could be a good fit for the brand, O.D. arrived at the name of his 4-year-old granddaughter Debbie. Inspired by a photo of Debbie in play clothes and her favorite straw hat, he decided to use the name Little Debbie and the image of her on the logo. Not until the first cartons were being printed did Debbie's parents, Ellsworth and Sharon McKee, discover that their daughter was the namesake of the new brand.

The First Family Pack

The first family pack was produced in August of 1960 and consisted of the original snack cake, the Oatmeal Creme Pie.

Did You Know?

Family packs were one of the first multiple-item baked goods available with individually wrapped products. The cost per carton was only 49 cents. By combining a quality product with outstanding value, Little Debbie quickly became a member of America's households. After its initial introduction, more than 14 million cakes were sold within 10 months. While the Oatmeal Creme Pie was the original Little Debbie snack cake, there were 14 different varieties by 1964 including the ever-popular Nutty Buddy Wafer Bars and Swiss Cake Roll.

Since 1960, Little Debbie snacks have remained a value leader. Currently, they sell for less than other leading brands while providing quality products. More than 75 varieties are available. Little Debbie snacks are available in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, as well as on U.S. military bases throughout the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these Honey Buns easy to pack for camping, picnics, and day trips?

Yes. Each of the six pastries is individually wrapped, so you can place one in a backpack, picnic basket, travel bag, or cooler without packing the entire box.

Do Honey Buns hold their shape and texture well during outdoor travel?

The soft pastry texture is intended to be tender and easy to eat, and the individual wrappers help protect each bun in a bag. Handle them gently and keep them cool for the best experience.

Can I eat a Honey Bun cold while hiking, commuting, or sitting at a picnic?

Yes. They are ready to eat without preparation, making them suitable for portable snacks during commuting, travel, hiking breaks, and picnics.

Can I warm Honey Buns while camping?

They can be warmed in a microwave at home, but standard camping equipment may not warm them evenly. For a hot treat away from a kitchen, use a microwave-safe container and suitable heating equipment.

Are these Honey Buns useful for outdoor coffee or tea breaks?

Yes. The sweet cinnamon-and-honey flavor and light glaze pair well with coffee or tea, making an individually wrapped bun convenient for a patio, campsite, picnic blanket, or roadside break.

Are Little Debbie Honey Buns a practical choice for travelers and picnic-goers?

Yes. The individually wrapped pastries are compact, ready to eat, and easy to distribute. The six-count box is also convenient for sharing among travelers or family members.

Would these Honey Buns fit in a day hiking pack or travel bag?

The compact 10.6-ounce box contains six small, wrapped buns, so you can pack the box or carry individual pastries as needed. Their soft texture makes them easy to enjoy without utensils.

Can I serve Honey Buns at an outdoor gathering without worrying about cutting or portioning them?

Yes. Each pastry is already separated by its own wrapper, making it easy to hand one to each guest and keep the remaining buns covered until needed.

How do Honey Buns compare with dense energy bars for a picnic snack?

Honey Buns provide a soft, sweet pastry option with cinnamon and honey flavor, while energy bars are typically denser, more compact, and formulated to emphasize sustained energy. The better choice depends on your preferences and the occasion.

How do these Honey Buns compare with fresh bakery rolls for an outdoor outing?

Fresh bakery rolls may offer more variety and a just-baked texture, while individually wrapped Honey Buns are easier to transport, portion, and keep covered. Honey Buns are also available without a bakery stop.

Are fresh pastries better than Honey Buns for an outdoor picnic?

Fresh pastries can be a good choice when served close to baking, but wrapped Honey Buns are more convenient for transport and sharing. Consider freshness, allergies, sweetness, and how long the food will sit outside.

What might discourage someone from taking Honey Buns on an outdoor trip?

They are sweet pastries and are not a substitute for a meal or a specialized performance snack. If you need a lower-sugar, allergen-free, or more substantial food option, consider alternatives that better meet those needs.

How should I warm a Little Debbie Honey Bun in the microwave?

Place the bun on a microwave-safe plate or paper towel, heat briefly using your microwave's guidance, and let it cool before eating. Start with a short interval for a softer center and add more time only as needed.

Can I use Honey Buns to make French toast or monkey bread?

Yes. The package provides recipe ideas for Honey Bun French Toast and Honey Bun Monkey Bread. Follow the included directions and use your own oven and microwave to prepare the recipes.

How should I store the Honey Buns to keep them fresh?

Keep the box tightly closed in a cool, dry place, and leave the individual wrappers in place until you are ready to eat a pastry. For longer storage, follow the package instructions.

Does this product work with a coffee maker, tea setup, lunchbox, or travel bag?

The pastries pair well with coffee and tea, fit conveniently in lunchboxes and travel bags, and can be eaten cold or warmed in a microwave. They do not require any special equipment beyond a cup or a microwave-safe dish for warming.

Can I serve Honey Buns with both coffee and tea?

Yes. The sweet cinnamon-and-honey flavor and light glaze complement either beverage. The product is not a coffee or tea accessory, but it is designed to pair naturally with both.

What comes in the box?

The 10.6-ounce box contains six Little Debbie Honey Buns, each individually wrapped. No additional equipment or ingredients are required to eat them cold; ingredients and recipe ideas for other preparations are listed on the package.

Are Little Debbie Honey Buns safe to eat for people with common food allergies?

The product contains wheat, milk, eggs, and soy, which are major allergens. Anyone with a relevant allergy or sensitivity should check the current package information and avoid the product if necessary.

How should I store the box after opening it?

Reseal or close the box securely and keep it in a cool, dry place. Do not remove the individual wrappers from the remaining buns, and follow any additional storage guidance printed on the package.

What is the difference between Honey Buns and other sweet breakfast pastries?

Honey Buns have a soft pastry-swirl texture with cinnamon, dried honey, and a light glaze. Other sweet breakfast pastries may be bread-based, muffin-shaped, frosted, or individually portioned, so the main differences involve flavor, texture, size, and packaging.
